1984 – George Orwell

The novel is set in a dystopian future where the totalitarian Party controls every aspect of people’s lives. Winston Smith, an ordinary Party member, secretly begins to question the regime and its leader, Big Brother. He starts a forbidden relationship with Julia and dreams of a world where people can think and live freely. However, the Party uses constant surveillance, propaganda, manipulation of history and psychological control to eliminate independent thought. Orwell presents a terrifying vision of a society where truth can be rewritten and individual freedom is completely suppressed. The novel explores themes of totalitarianism, surveillance, propaganda, freedom, truth and resistance.
